Sunrise view down the valleys!
Day 1: Make the Most of Check-In Day
Check-in days can sometimes feel like a write-off, but why not turn yours into the start of your adventure? Plan to arrive in the area a little earlier and fit in a fun activity before checking in to Ama Casa Cottages at 14h00.
Some great first-day options include:
- Dragon Rock Reptile Centre – a great stop for animal lovers.
- Vertical Rush – for those who want to jump straight into action.
After your first taste of the Drakensberg, reward yourself with a relaxing dinner. If you’re not in the mood to cook after a long drive, head down the hill to Dragonview Lodge, where elegant dining meets panoramic mountain views — the perfect place to enjoy your first sunset in style.
Day 2: Trails & Treats
Lace Up for the Monks Cowl Trails
Start your day with one of the region’s most iconic hikes at Monks Cowl Nature Reserve.
- The Sphinx and Crystal Falls Trail is a scenic moderate route, perfect for casual hikers.
- Blind Man’s Corner and Kirklands Pass is ideal if you’re looking for a longer, more challenging option.
Distance: 6–12 km | Duration: 3–6 hours
After your mountain adventure, treat yourself at Berg Air Lifestyle Centre. Discover handcrafted delights at the Drakensberg Chocolate Memories Shop, sip freshly roasted coffee from Berg Bean Roastery, or toast to your hike with a cold, locally brewed beer at Drakensberg Brewery. Don’t forget to grab some artisanal cheese from Macedonia Cheese Co. — a perfect addition to your evening platter.
Spend your afternoon soaking in serenity at Ama Casa. Relax in your private Jacuzzi with sweeping mountain views. As night falls, enjoy a braai under the stars or cook a cozy dinner in your fully equipped self-catering unit.
Day 3: Soar & Explore
Ease into your morning — sleep in, or rise early to witness the mountains awaken. Watch as the sunlight paints the peaks, each moment unveiling new hues in a breathtaking display.
Head to the beloved Valley Bakery (closed Sundays) for a hearty breakfast. Choose from a selection of artisan breads, pastries, and irresistible desserts — and grab a few treats to take home.
Then it’s time to meet the region’s feathered residents at Falcon Ridge Birds of Prey Centre. Their 11h00 show (daily except Mondays and Fridays — call ahead!) is both educational and thrilling, showcasing majestic birds like eagles, falcons, owls, and vultures in action. Don’t forget your hat and sunscreen!!
Keep the adrenaline going with an unforgettable treetop experience at Drakensberg Canopy Tours, where you’ll zip-line through lush indigenous forest in an exhilarating blend of nature and adventure.
Return to Ama Casa for a well-deserved wind-down. Cool off with a dip in your private Jacuzzi, stroll to the on-site dam, or take a refreshing swim in the lodge pool. End your day stargazing from the comfort of your patio — a peaceful close to a day full of excitement.
Sadly, it’s time to check out — but don’t worry, there’s still so much more to explore in the Central Drakensberg. Whether it’s the trails you missed, the food you didn’t taste, or the thrill you didn’t try, you’ll be planning your next Ama Casa escape before you leave the driveway.
